Knutson Companies, a leading real estate development and management company based in Bismarck, announces significant updates on the ongoing renovations and new partnerships at the historic Bismarck Depot. Since acquiring the depot in 2022, Knutson Companies has committed to revitalizing this cherished landmark, enhancing its historical significance while modernizing it for contemporary use.
New Tenants Announced
Cam Knutson, owner of Knutson Companies, reports that the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (TRPLF) and Funatix Events will be the first tenants in the newly renovated depot.
Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation
The TRPLF will utilize the entire second-floor and third-floor mezzanine, establishing a dedicated hub for the foundation's administrative and operational activities. This space will enable their team to effectively coordinate educational programs, outreach initiatives and strategic partnerships. Additionally, it will support the development and planning of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, a $300 million project set to open in Medora, North Dakota, in 2026. By establishing its presence at the Historic Bismarck Depot, TRPLF will further its mission to preserve and promote Roosevelt's legacy through various strategic efforts and community engagements.
“The Bismarck Train Depot was integral to Roosevelt's travels, serving as a gateway to the western territories he so dearly loved,” said Matt Brinley, Chief Communications Officer for TRPLF. “Our presence here will honor Roosevelt’s connection to the Dakota Territory and the Badlands.”
Funatix Events
Funatix Events, the sister company of the beloved Bismarck Larks baseball team, will establish its headquarters in a new 1,300-square-foot addition on the east side of the main floor. Known for creating engaging and immersive experiences, Funatix Events will play a pivotal role in transforming the depot into a dynamic community space, celebrating the historic depot's original role as the area’s key transportation and social center.
“We are excited to bring our vision to life in such an iconic location,” said John Bollinger, CEO of Funatix Events. “This partnership will enable us to create dynamic events that cater to the community's diverse interests, revitalizing the depot as a shared space for all.”
By leveraging their extensive experience with the Bismarck Larks, Funatix Events aims to infuse the same level of excitement and community involvement into the Historic Bismarck Depot. This initiative will not only elevate the depot's appeal but also provide a versatile setting for a variety of activities and gatherings, including family-friendly events, reinforcing its role as a central hub for the community.
Project Timeline and Future Events
Significant renovations have been underway to preserve and enhance the depot’s historical charm. Key updates include:
● Comprehensive roof repairs
● New windows and doorways
● Restoration of original walls and flooring
● A new parking lot layout with improved landscaping, lighting, sidewalks and automated parking
● Expanded patios and updated underground electrical systems
The exterior space, spanning over 30,000 square feet, will be transformed into a multi-use site capable of hosting various community events and serving as a parking facility. This redevelopment aims to make the depot a central entertainment and gathering hub
Future Tenants and Community Impact
Knutson Companies is actively seeking additional tenants to fill the remaining spaces on the main floor. It envisions a full-service restaurant and a café complementing the depot’s offerings.
“We’re committed to making the Historic Bismarck Depot a vibrant part of our community,” said Knutson. “This project is a testament to our dedication to preserving history while fostering growth and innovation.”
The depot’s substantial completion is anticipated by September 2024. A full calendar of events will follow in the fall with an expanded lineup for 2025.
